Consumer Unit (fuse board) Upgrades & Installation
What is a consumer unit?
A consumer unit refers to the fuse board or main fuse box and it's where all the electrical wiring form all around the house meets, so that each part can be connected to a fuse. The reason for this is that it offers some protection in the event of a fault or overload, in which case the fuse will blow instead of the wiring over-heating and catching fire. Every part of the home electrical system needs to be fused including the lighting, cooker, sockets, heating and shower etc. Problems can arise from an overload and when parts of the electrical system's wiring begin to fail.
Why does a consumer unit need upgrading?
The old type fuse boards must be replaced by a next generation Consumer Unit, which has to conform to meet BS7671 amendment 3, which came into force in January 2016. This is to ensure electrical safety around the home, and the unit must also be installed by a registered electrician. A consumer unit can be replaced at any time but this is quite often carried out at the same time as a rewiring job, an electrical repair or any other job that will require compliance with the new regulations. However, before the replacement unit can be installed a test must first be carried out to ensure the existing wiring system is suitable for the new unit. A qualified Hamilton Group electrician will produce an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) before starting the change.
Who should carry out the consumer unit installation?
Together with producing an Electrical Installation Condition Report, the electrical contractor will also ensure the earthing and bonding of your electrical system is up to standard. Also, that the meter tails are the right size and there are adequate means of isolation between the electric meter and the consumer unit. If not, then a further upgrade will be required. The new unit will be different from the existing unit in that it will incorporate two residual current devices (RCDs). This offers further protection to the overall system and allows for isolating parts of the electrical system when required. Although these upgraded units can be purchased quite easily over the counter, it is vitally important that the installation work be carried out by a registered and fully qualified electrician (NAPIT).
