Food Waste Disposal Units – Dos and Donts!
What should you never put down your food disposal unit?
A food waste disposal unit, such an Isinkerator is a fantastic appliance to have in your kitchen. But, there are certain things that you should never put into one.
It’s tempting to simply scrape all your leftovers straight into your food waste disposal unit, but this really isn’t a good idea. To keep ensure your Insinkerator (or similar product) keeps running smoothly, there are a few things that you should avoid throwing down there. Things like rice, pasta, bread, chips or potatoes should not be disposed of, these are the most common foods that get thrown into the disposal since many people don’t know that they can clog up their drain.
Celery is another food that is not good as it’s quite stringy, and can often cause problems. Bones, obviously, are the other thing that should definitely be thrown in the bin rather than scraped off down the sink. Oil or grease should also never be poured down your disposal unit since it will harden and either clog up the unit or your waste pipework. Also, if it’s not biodegradable, it should not be put into the drain either.
