If you or anyone you know has old electrics in their home, it’s a very good idea to have a full Electrical Installation and Condition Report, or EICR, carried out in your home. We’d recommend one to new home owners, or every 5 years at least. Electricity can’t be seen, like water can, and often you don’t know you have a problem until it’s too late.
We charge £225 for an EICR, and that’s up to 5 circuits. The whole inspection takes between 4 – 8 hours to complete, if done properly, and it will be able to pick up on any faults you may have on your system. Be very weary of companies that charge ridiculously cheap prices for their EICR’s, or that fly through your EICR in under an hour, they won’t be doing a proper job.
We also offer a free “pop in service” to customers in and around Brixton, South West London (Where we’re based). So if you’re worried about anything, we can send one of our electricians round, completely free of charge, to carry out a visual inspection of your fuse board and electrics in your home. He’ll be able to give you his professional opinion, and hopefully put your mind at ease.
Please see the photo attached. This is of a ‘junction box’ that one of our head electrician, Tim, recently found hidden under a customer floorboards. As you can see the “black” wire is completely burn out, and a serious fire hazard under the wooden floor boards. The old consumer unit (or fuse board) wasn’t even tripping the power either, as it was too old and not sensitive enough. Tim initially went out to the property because of a fault with the kitchen sockets, and while carrying out his tests, he noticed a break in another circuit, and luckily found this junction box before anything serious happened. He replaced the burnt cable and junction box, and fitted a new consumer unit as well.
New consumer units or fuse boards are a lot more sensitive, and will trip the power quicker than older units, and with the RCD protection that new boards come with, they’re a lot safer. The customer was extremely relieved as a potential electrical fire was avoided, and will be avoided in the future.
