Drain Descaling Services In South West London

What Is Drain Descaling?

Over time all drainage pipes will become lined with limescale and salts from the action of water being continuously passed though them. In areas with hard water, such as south west London, the problem can be much more severe. When limescale begins to build up, further deposits will adhere to those already existing on the pipe walls, forming multiple layers. As more and more layers are added, the internal passage or waterway becomes narrower and restricted, which can cause a blockage or even several blockages. The only solution is to completely descale the drainage system by blasting away the lime scale deposits.

What Is Limescale?

Have you ever noticed milky white deposits on taps and glass shower surrounds? That's a sure sign that you have hard water. Take a look inside your kettle and you will see a crusty deposit at the bottom with loose flakes of scale on the sides and in the water itself. That's limescale. These are calcium carbonate deposits and they occur naturally in water that has a high mineral content. Most areas of the UK are affected by hard water, whilst other areas, mainly on the west side of the UK, have soft water. Although the limescale deposits can be a nuisance to pipes and surfaces around sinks and baths, they is not considered harmful to humans.

What Causes Limescale?

Limescale forms because of a high content of calcium and magnesium in the water. The water has passed through limestone and chalk on its long journey to your tap and has collected these elements along the way. It's not commercially viable to remove the calcium at water treatment plants and would involve adding further acidic chemicals, which might prove harmful.

How To Remove Limescale

In domestic appliances such as kettles, limescale can be removed by adding vinegar and leaving it for a few hours to break up the scale. Washing machines and dishwashers can be treated by adding chemical tablets. However, central heating systems can have water softener treatments added to the system, although few people tend to routinely do this. For drainage systems, none of the above are effective and the only solution to limescale build up is to have it removed by mechanical means or by high pressure water jetting. Drain descaling on a regular basis can prevent more serious problems later.
